Cold Spring Apothecary

I just received my new shipment of goods from Stacey at Cold Spring Apothecary! So far I'm loving the woodland rose all natural basil and hibiscus volumizing shampoo and conditioner. It not only smells amazing but it actually works on my limp, fine hair. I'm on my third bottle of the petigrain and gardenia facial lotion. The ginger and sea salt spray is doing a nice job reminding my hair of those summer days floating in the ocean... The prices are really reasonable considering it is all natural, it smells amazing and it actually works. Most of my experiences with all natural products have resulted in greasy limp hair and breakouts from a much too thick lotion. Stacey is about to open her own shop in Cold Spring! Congrats Stacey!

On Monday, I was lucky enough to make the trek up to Russel Wright's house in Garrison, NY for an undisclosed project. For those of you not familiar, he's an industrial designer from the 60's who built an eco sensitive home called Manitoga. Door knobs are made of rocks, couches are embedded in rocks, walls are made of plaster and pine needles while sliding doors have pressed flowers and plants in between plexy-glass. It's a national historic landmark and open to the public.

This week I was lucky enough to be included at CRAFT night with Liz from Hey We Made It!

We explored the world of pickling while eating peanut butter stuffed pretzels and comparing dirty feet. We pickled beets, cabbage, cucumber, asparagus and garlic and supposedly we have to wait for 2 weeks?! Rumor has it that some nights include homemade tattoos from Nurit!

Have you been? It's a psychedelic, nag champa zen pad in the middle of Tribeca. Keep your eyes peeled for an inconspicuous black door that has a sign reading "Dream House." Dream House was created in 1993 by modern composer La Monte Young and visual artist Marian Zazeela. Zazeela explains that “together, the sound and light can be experienced as a new form, or new media: the sound and light environment. The experience of the two mediums together as one requires a new, or at least different, mode of attention.” A new collection of pitches forms with every move you make as you encounter the different resonating sound fields creating by La Young.
It's open Thursday and Saturday 2-midnight to the public. Go stretch, roll around, do some headstands, back bends, take a nap...

Homemade granola!

2 cups old fashioned rolled oats
1/3 cup flax seed
1/2 cup crushed almonds and walnuts
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon all spice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup dried cranberries

Mix all ingredients together then spread out on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes stirring every 10 minutes. Add cranberries after the 30 minutes. Keep in airtight container.

This is a spin off recipe on some "healthy-ish" cookies we attempted to make this weekend. Once baked they came out of the oven in large uneven granola chunk form instead of round doughey cookie form. They were quickly consumed with discussion of making granola for the next go around. This recipe is almost identical to the oatmeal cookie recipe sans the brown rice flour and butter. Enjoy!

Family Band performed one of their most "radical" shows yet. It was an unassuming Sunday night. We were filled to the brim with buns, ramen and raw fish on ice blocks, from Sui Ren, a new favorite. We headed over to watch Family Band play on a rooftop nearby . Little did we know, once we walked up to the roof we would be welcomed into a large moon-like bubble with psychedelic images displayed on the dome... It was more than epic. I met Becca Mccharen of Chromat Clothing in a dimly lit restaurant booth after she had been to almost a million fashion parties in one day, but still seemed eager for more. She's sweet as pie, ambitious (way more than I) and her clothes correlate with her architecture background. She's currently located in Virginia but hopefully her clothes will be in a store near you soon!
